Water Safety Instructor Course

If you are at least 16 and a proficient swimmer, you can become an American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor and teach swimming and water safety courses!

As a Water Safety Instructor (WSI), you can:

  • Teach skills that can save lives
  • Gain valuable work experience as an aquatics professional
  • Earn money—or join a volunteer team—while you help people learn aquatics skills
  • Learn organizational and presentation skills that can help you in any career
  • Teach kids to swim, help adults refine their strokes and/or teach diving safety techniques
  • Help prepare swim coaches to prevent and respond to emergency situations
  • Make a difference in people's lives


Minimum age of 16 before the final scheduled session (proof required).

Must demonstrate the following Level IV* skills according to the Stroke Performance Charts:

  • 25 yards front crawl
  • 25 yards back crawl
  • 25 yards breaststroke
  • 25 yards elementary backstroke
  • 25 yards sidestroke
  • 15 yards butterfly
  • tread water for 1 minute
  • maintain position on back 1 minute in deep water.
