Hevesi Jewish Heritage Library

Dear Friends,

After 34 years of housing the Rabbi Simon Hevesi Jewish Heritage Library, the Central Queens Y has decided, with sadness, to close the library in August.

The CQY has been proud to host this excellent Jewish collection, free of charge to the public. Unfortunately, over time, we have seen library use decline.  At the same time, public use of the building has increased tremendously, so that the agency is finding it difficult to accommodate all of its programming.

Given serious space limitations, we have decided to close the library—but to keep the Jewish cultural programs which serve the Jewish community, from young families to seniors.  We know that many of you will be relieved to hear that our very popular library programs are going to continue, without change, in our new Cultural Arts and Jewish Heritage Programs Department.  And, we are thrilled to announce that Peggy Kurtz, our librarian for many years, has accepted the position of director of that department.

While the Central Queens Y is proud to serve all of our community, we are also proud of our role in fostering the knowledge and appreciation of our Jewish heritage.  Among the many Jewish programs planned for the fall through this department, we are excited to announce a Sukkah dinner for young families; a Jewish history class; a talk by religious leader Rabbi Marc Angel; a presentation on Yiddish literature; an open conversation between former NYC Public Advocate Mark Green and former NYS Comptroller Alan Hevesi; and numerous other Jewish authors and speakers discussing Jewish contemporary life and history in our Author Series.  Please contact us directly at extension 151 or pkurtz@cqy.org for our beautiful forthcoming series brochure, or for details about fall events and classes.

Our first aim for the library collection has been to find the very best home for our books, where they will be well loved, well used and eventually passed on to others.  Our library staff and wonderful volunteers have taken great care to maintain an excellent library, and we have enormous respect for the cultural value of the collection.  All Jewish religious texts will be properly handled in accordance with Jewish ritual requirements.

We want to express our gratitude in particular to our dedicated library volunteers who have maintained the library for so many years.  It was through their work that we were able to sustain this free collection for the public through so many years.

Please know that the Central Queens Y will always take great pride in our Jewish heritage, while also welcoming all members of our diverse community.  We continue to support Jewish programming through many of our departments, from the Early Childhood Center to the Senior Department to our Cultural Arts and Jewish Heritage Department, with the hope that it enriches the lives of all our patrons.
