Central Queens Y is a 501(c)(3) non-profit community center serving over 10,000 persons of diverse backgrounds in Queens County. The CQY provides a continuum of social, recreational, and educational services for children, families and adults.  For over two generations, the Central Queens Y, located in Forest Hills Queens, has been a special place for thousands of families, older adults, children and individuals who participate in its parenting, preschool, after school, cultural arts, camping, health and fitness, social services, and senior programming.

DESCRIPTION OF THE JOB

The Central Queens Y is looking for a well-qualified Group Fitness/Recreation Afterschool Facilitator who is passionate about offering high quality programming to adolescents in an afterschool setting. The ideal candidate is interested in youth development, works well with diverse populations, engages teens with friendliness and trust, has behavior management skills in afterschool or classroom setting, and is passionate about supporting young people to live healthy and active lives.  It is important that the individual is able to plan and facilitate fitness instruction independently, multi-task, problem-solve, work both independently and on a team, and maintains organization and punctuality. The individual should be comfortable stepping out of their comfort zone and supports others to do so.

The facilitator will work within the S.A.F.E. (Student and Family Engagement) Program at John Bowne High School, a 21st century Community Schools program which supports youth from a holistic approach through mentorship and afterschool enrichment. Our goal is for our students to feel competent, confident, and engaged in positive relationships, family, and community.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE JOB 

As a Group Fitness/Recreation Afterschool Facilitator, you will:  

  1. Instruct and motivate 25-30 students in an afterschool setting (approx. 3:00-5:30pm) 1-2 days a week for two 16-week terms (Sept-June 2018-2019) in wellness, fitness, nutrition, and recreation.
  2. Establish rapport with young people and create safe, supportive, structured afterschool setting that encourages goal setting, self-expression and personal growth.
  3. Develop curriculum and facilitate Group Fitness/Recreation programming on a variety of topics such as: yoga, pilates, Zumba, cardio/fitness, nutrition, healthy lifestyle/habits, stretching, team games and problem solving, etc.
  4. Assist participants in identifying their social-emotional strengths and barriers, educational and fitness goals.
  5. Track and log student attendance.
  6. Offer one family-student workshop in fitness/wellness one evening during each term.
  7. Prepare students for S.A.F.E. student showcase at the end of each 16-week term.
  8. Communicate student attendance, well being, and progress to S.A.F.E. counselors and collaborate with S.A.F.E. Program staff.
  9. Provide surveys/evaluations to students to monitor progress of students and ensure success of program.

SPECIFICATIONS FOR EDUCATION

  • Bachelor’s Degree Required; Master's Degree a plus
  • Background in Fitness Instruction, Social Work, Community Organizing, Psychology, Youth Development, Afterschool Programming, Counseling, Mentorship, Education, Mental Health Counseling (MHC), Social Justice preferred

QUALIFICATIONS

  • At least 2-3 years of experience working with children, adolescents, and/or families
  • At least 2-3 years of experience providing fitness programming
  • Workshop implementation/afterschool programming experience preferred

JOB DETAILS

Salary: $25-30/hour (commensurate with experience)
Hours: Part-Time, 2-5 hours per week
Schedule: 1-2 days/week (afterschool hours; availability for four evening events throughout year)
Location: John Bowne High School (Flushing, Queens)
Expected Start Date: September 2018
