One of the most ancient Mizrahi communities, the Jews of Bukhara were intimately tied to Central Asian culture. Author Alanna Cooper tells the story of this community in Bukhara and their struggle to adapt yet preserve their own culture abroad. Cooper's new book makes clear the tensions inherent in keeping Jews as one people worldwide over the course of a long and varied diaspora.
Alanna Cooper teaches at Boston University.
